Falkirk Reaction: Paul Hartley & Mitch Megginson

Back to news

MANAGER Paul Hartley and double goal scorer Mitch Megginson spoke to the media after our 2-0 League One victory over Falkirk at Balmoral Stadium.

Paul said: “I thought we were terrific, from start to finish.

“I was delighted with the way the players managed the game, with how they dealt with the directness of the play from Falkirk.

‘We coped with that and also played some great stuff.

“We scored two really good goals and it was a very strong 90 minutes from us.

“It’s good we got another clean sheet too.

“That’s what good teams do, they make sure they are strong defensively.

“Rory McAllister was also terrific, he gave us a different dimension, but the whole team played well.

“It was a good day for us but we know we now have five very tough games to go.

“We are in a good position, but three or four other teams are in a good position too.

“For us, at the start of the season, our aim was to get to eighth position and beyond.

“To have managed to actually secure a place in the top five is great for the club.

“Even more so because it’s been against teams who are full-time and clubs that are really knowledgeable about this level.

“Credit must go to the players.

“They have really worked hard – but they know they have to keep it going.”

Mitch, whose double against the Bairns brought his tally so far in the campaign to 11, was delighted with his opener.

It came when Connor Scully’s corner from the right was flicked on to him by Scott Ross, a routine they had worked on in training earlier in the week.

Mitch said: “The coaching staff are always getting us to try different stuff at corners and free-kicks and it’s great when the effort put in pays off in the manner that it did.

“I can’t say my overhead finish is something we had worked on, I had to improvise that bit!

“It was the only way I was going to get a shot in because of the way the ball popped up in the air and it was pleasing to see it go in.

“We knew the first goal would be important in game as crucial as that one was.

“It’s pleasing my second came from a set-piece too (Mitch scored after Fraser Fyvie had fired a free-kick low into the Falkirk penalty area) because we spend a fair bit of our Thursday night training sessions focussing on those.

“We aren’t the biggest of teams, so we are grateful the coaching staff have come up with ways of giving us a fighting chance of scoring more goals in those sort of situations.

“It usually involves having players making clever runs, as Scott did at the first one, to make space and create opportunities for others in the penalty area.

“To beat full-time opponents as good as Falkirk are gives us great encouragement as we move into the final group of games.

“To a man, we all put in top performances and worked our socks off, which is what you need to do to compete in this league.”
