We are delighted to confirm the signing of former Dumbarton central defender, Morgyn Neill.
The 25-year-old, who became a free agent after leaving Dumbarton at the end of last season, has agreed a three-year deal, which will keep him at Balmoral Stadium until at least the end the 2023/24 campaign.
Manager Paul Hartley said: “Morgyn really impressed when he played against us last season, it’s one of the main reasons why we are delighted that he has agreed to join us.
“He was very positive about coming to Cove, which is important when you approach any player.
“Having played every minute of every game last season for Dumbarton he had other options, but grabbed the chance to join us, which is great.
“Morgyn provides increased competition for places in a key area of the squad.
“He is a really strong defender, a top-class organiser and good in both boxes.
“Morgan’s vast experience of playing at League One level will also be an asset in what we know is going to be another very tough season.”
Morgyn, who was unveiled to the media as our first new signing of the close season at Balmoral Stadium this morning, said:
“As soon as Cove Rangers made their approach it was a no brainer.
“I had a lot of other options but I chose Cove because they are a team on the up, who have shown real ambition.
“The club won League Two straight away and then made the play-offs in the first season at League One level, which was excellent.
“I’m ambitious too, I want to be at a club that is hungry for success and I can promise you I would put my head through a brick wall to help achieve that.
“I’m the sort who defends as if his life depends on it.
“I’m also excited by the prospect of playing for Paul Hartley, one of the most respected managers and coaches in the Scottish game, as well as one of the best midfielders of his generation.
“I was blown away by his enthusiasm when we spoke a couple of weeks ago and I thought right then, I need to be part of this.
“There is also the added bonus of teaming up with Gordon Young (our assistant manager) again.
“Gordon was my coach when I was a youth player at Motherwell and really helped to push my career on.
“He’s an excellent coach and I know I will enjoy working alongside him and Paul.
“I know a good few of the players already at the club, I have played against the likes of Rory McAllister, Fraser Fyvie, Scott Ross, Ryan Strachan and Mitch Megginson a good few times over the years.
“It’s great I will now have the opportunity to play alongside them and I really can’t wait to get going.”
Former Scottish youth international Morgyn came through the highly rated youth system at Fir Park – where he worked alongside our assistant manager Gordon Young – but a lack of first team opportunities saw him agree to a loan spell with Ayr United.
The imposing and powerful defender then joined Livingston in 2015 and made his first team debut, against Hibs, before moving to Stranraer, after initially enjoying a loan spell with them.
Morgyn also played for Stenhousemuir before signing for the Sons in 2019, where he was a first team regular over the course of the last two seasons and was also named as the club’s player of the year.
Everyone at Cove Rangers would like to welcome Morgyn to the club and wish him well during his time at Balmoral Stadium.
