Morgyn Neill | “It Gives Us Something Positive To Build On”

Back to news

Cove Rangers defender Morgyn Neill is delighted his first goal for the club earned us a vital cinch League One victory over Airdrieonians at Balmoral Stadium.

Morgyn, who joined us in the summer after leaving Dumbarton, netted with a brilliant header – off a quality cross from Shay Logan – with just a couple of minutes to go.

Morgyn said: “I’ve been desperate to score one, so I’m delighted it ended up being a big one.

“We had already hit their bar a couple of times, so I always felt the goal was coming.”

Morgyn’s glory moment came after he had stayed forward when the Diamonds defence had cleared the ball at a corner.

“I just had a feeling something was eventually going to fall our way,” he said.

“I knew we were into the last few minutes, so decided to stay in the box in the hope that I could make problems for them.

“They had everyone back, so there was less need for me to rush back into our defence.

“It was a great cross from Shay – although we were joking later that it’s probably the first time he’s managed to pick someone out with one this season!

“He’s a quality player though and the cross was so good all I needed to do was make sure I got my head to it.

“I accept it wasn’t the prettiest of games but sometimes you need to be able to win ugly if you want to be competing at the top end of league.

“You also have to consider how hard it is to beat full-time opponents.

“I know a few of the Airdrie lads, I still keep in contact with them, they have a very strong squad.

“They will be up there at the top end of the table, so any points you take off them are valuable.”

Morgyn also enjoyed helping record a second clean sheet in a row as we earned a result that leaves us two points behind table leaders Queen’s Park.

He said: “It was the first thing Scott (Ross) and I spoke about when the game finished.

“We know if we can keep the back door shut then we’ve always got a chance of winning because we have some really quality players up front.

“I got the goal this time, but there will be plenty of occasions when it will be the strikers or midfielders who bail us out because they create so many chances.

“We need to do our bit by making sure we keep a clean sheet – so that any goals we get gain the maximum reward.

“We have looked pretty strong at the back in the last four games, it took a penalty for Montrose to score against us and we also kept Stenhousemuir out in the cup.

“It gives is something positive to build on, but we know we face another tough test down at Alloa this weekend.”
