Cove Rangers striker Leighton McIntosh spoke to the media ahead of today’s cinch League One meeting with Dumbarton at Balmoral Stadium.
Leighton said: “It’s great we are going into the game leading the league table, but the hardest part is making sure you stay there.
“We have worked tirelessly to get up there, but you have to dig deep and work even harder once it has happened, even more so this season, when League One is probably the most competitive it has ever been.
“If any team was to start getting complacent in this division they could easily find themselves losing a few games on the trot and dropping right down the table.
“We have to guard against that and the manager has been on to us, right from the start, that you must look to maintain very high standards every week.”
Leighton is pleased to be facing The Sons on the back of coming off the bench to score in our 5-1 midweek victory over Rangers B in the SPFL Trust Trophy.
He’s hoping that will be enough to keep him involved this afternoon.
Leighton said: “It was good to get a few minutes in the game last Saturday and again against Rangers B.
“The more I can play the more I feel I can make a positive contribution.
“I’m not complaining, the competition for places up front is fierce and Mitch (Megginson) and Rory (McAllister) have been banging in the goals.
“Scoring against Rangers B is a wee reminder that I’m eager to get in there though.
“When the team is playing as well as we have been all you can do is keep banging on the door and make sure you are ready to grab any opportunities that do come your way.”
Leighton came off the bench for Peterhead when they played the Rangers first team in the final of the same competition, at Hampden in 2016.
“It would be nice to play in the final with Cove too,” said Leighton.
“Facing Rangers that day, in front of a full Hampden, was a really good experience.
“Getting to the semi-finals and final had a positive knock-on effect on Peterhead’s league form that season.
“I’m hoping it will be the same for Cove, although our recent results suggest we are in a pretty good groove at the moment anyway.
“We have a very strong squad that go into every game with the right mentality, which is important when you have so many tough games ahead.”
