Peterhead Reaction | The Manager & Mitch Megginson

Back to news

Manager Paul Hartley and skipper Mitch Megginson spoke to the media following Saturday’s 5-2 victory over Peterhead.

Rory McAllister opened the scoring from the spot within just seven minutes, after Harry Milne was tripped by Scott Brown as he burst into the box.

Mitch Megginson got on the scoresheet twice, the first coming just moments after we made it 1-0, by calmly rounding Peterhead goalkeeper Long and finding the net, before getting on the end of a Milne cross in the 20th minute to extend our lead to 3-1.

Harry Milne was involved throughout and got the goal his performance deserved just two minutes after the break, by getting on the end of a nice lay-off courtesy of Blair Yule and slotting into the far corner.

Milne capped off a brilliant afternoon by getting his second of the match in the 76th minute, after again finding space in the box to control a cross from Megginson, before finding the bottom right corner with his weaker foot, securing all three points and ensuring our lead at the top of cinch League One remains at five points.

Mitch Megginson was delighted with the victory, saying: “I thought from start to finish we were really good.

“We maybe didn’t get up to the levels we usually produce, but that was probably down to the amount of effort we put in on Tuesday night.

“We scored five good goals and picked up an important three points.

“We said in the warm-up that we wanted to go out all guns blazing to try and get a couple of early goals, and we did which helped set the foundations for the game, and it also knocked the stuffing out of Peterhead.

Megginson and McAllister’s first half goals brought their personal goal tallies to 19 each for the season.

Mitch said: “This season I’ve been more involved in the play, I’ve been dropping in deeper and getting on the ball more, so I’m happy to have been able to score 19 goals so far.

“I want to keep adding to that tally and I’ll see where that takes me at the end of the season, but the most important thing is that it’s helping the team.

“It’s brilliant to have Rory (McAllister) playing alongside me.

“He is a very clever player and he allows me to play off him – It’s a great partnership we have.

“We are two different types of players, but we complement each other well.

The skipper was also particularly impressed by Harry Milne’s performance, saying: “Harry has been different class for us.

“We missed him on Tuesday night, particularly his athleticism and attacking threat.

“You seen that from the first whistle on Saturday – He gets in the box, commits two players and gets fouled to win the penalty.

“He’s been tremendous for us so far this season, and we hope that continues.

Manager Paul Hartley was also full of praise for left-back Harry Milne.

“Harry Milne was absolutely brilliant.”, he said.

“I thought he was our best attacking player to be honest with you – he could’ve scored a hat-trick!

“His overall play was magnificent.

“First and foremost, he’s a defender so he needs to defend, but at the top end of the pitch he can create, and his energy levels are terrific.

“He’s bought into what we try and do, tactically he has adjusted really well, which is really pleasing.

The manager was also impressed with the performance of front two McAllister and Megginson.

“For any successful team you’ve got to have strikers that can score goals – we’ve got two of the best at this level.”, he said.

“There are times when they won’t score every week but we know when they get a chance they will take it.

“I’m really pleased for both of them.

Paul was also happy to come away from Saturday’s match with all three points, saying: “I thought first half we were OK, I didn’t think we were brilliant.

“It was disappointing to concede the two goals, but going forward we were really good, and some of our combination play was terrific in the final third.

“We just need to keep winning, that’s the key thing for us at the business end of the season.”
