From Ball Boy to Captaining the Team to the Championship | Mitch Megginson Reflects on Title Success

Back to news

Mitch Megginson still can’t believe he’s gone from being a ball boy and matchday mascot with Cove Rangers to captaining us to the greatest triumph so far in the club’s history.

“It’s special because this club means a lot to me and a lot to my family,” said Mitch.

Our skipper – and top scorer – was still at Primary School when he led the team out for his father Mike’s testimonial match at Allan Park.

Former striker and midfielder Mike Megginson is a club legend in his own right and was awarded a joint testimonial match, along with defender Dave Whyte.

Mitch, his sister Mikaela and Dave Whyte’s nephew, Darren, had the honour of leading the teams out at Allan Park for the testimonial.

SPECIAL DAY: Mitch Megginson, front left, Mikaela Megginson and Darren Whyte were the mascots for the joint testimonial match for former Cove Rangers duo Mike Megginson and Dave Whyte.

Mitch was also a ball boy at Cove Rangers games, when we played in the Highland League.

He’s gone from that to captaining us to the cinch League One title and promotion to the Championship .

The fact his father, mother Lorna, sister Mikaela and his fiancé – Sara Kelly – were in the Alan McRae Stand at Balmoral Stadium on Saturday to see his goal beat Dumbarton to clinch the title means the world to Mitch.

He said: “It’s something I will never forget.

“It was watching my father playing for Cove Rangers at Allan Park that sparked my love for football.

“Being the mascot, along with Mikaela, at his testimonial match was one of the biggest thrills of my childhood.

“I also have happy memories of being with him when he celebrated trophy wins with the club.

“So it was huge having my father – and the rest of the family – there to help me celebrate making history with Cove Rangers.

PRIZE GUYS: Mike and Mitch Megginson with the cinch League One trophy.

“I’ve never felt as proud as I do right at this time.

“I’m proud for the group of us who came up from the Highland League with club and also those who have joined us since then.

“We have become such a close group it really is phenomenal to able to celebrate such a huge triumph with people who are my friends as well as my team-mates.

“They make my life easy, I’m a bit lost for words to describe just how good they are.

“I suppose sensational would be appropriate.

“It’s the same with everyone that works behind the scenes at the club.

“I’m not just talking about the manager and coaches, you also have to mention the physios, the kit man and the army of other people who put things in place to allow us to concentrate on doing our best out on the pitch.

“I’ve seen the amount of hard work they have put in to help us right through the campaign.

“This title win is as much theirs as it is ours.”

Mitch will also treasure the fact he will go into the history books as the man who scored the goal that clinched the cinch League One title for Cove Rangers.

He said: “It’s one I will remember for the rest of my life.

“Nothing was happening for us, we just needed a break, so it was great to be able to get the goal at just the right time.

“Shay (Logan) made it easy by playing a great ball in to me.

“It was then just a case of making sure I hit the target, it was lovely to see the ball go in.

“It was a difficult day because we knew what a win would mean to us.

“We weren’t at our best, but we left nothing out there and I feel we deserved to come away with the victory.”

We conclude our season with a visit to East Fife, the last team to actually beat us in the league – back in October – on Saturday.

Mitch said: “Even though the league has been won, we will be looking to finish on a positive note.

“The fact East Fife were the last to beat us is a reminder that we will need to maintain high standards if we are to get the result we want.”
