Centenary Celebrations Begin in Style

Back to news

Sir Alex Ferguson, Alex McLeish and Dick Campbell kicked off our Centenary Celebrations in style as the star guests at a gala dinner at the P&J Live Arena.

Former Aberdeen and Manchester United manager Sir Alex, Dons’ Gothenburg Great and ex-Scotland and Rangers boss Alex and Arbroath manager Dick entertained the 1100-plus guests with tales from their careers during question and answer sessions, hosted by our new head of media and communications, BBC Scotland broadcaster Richard Gordon.

Chairman Keith Moorhouse also spoke of his pride at seeing the club moving into its second century preparing to compete in the Championship next season, just three years on from gaining promotion from the Highland League into the SPFL.

Keith, who also revealed the club has agreed a three year extension with principal club partner ACE Group, said: “Thanks to the efforts of manager Paul Hartley, his players and all of our backroom staff – we have already marked the occasion in style.

Beginning our second century as a Championship club, after winning the cinch League One title, is way beyond what any of our forefathers could ever have imagined achieving when they formed Cove Rangers in 1922.”

Keith also praised his predecessor as chairman, and now club president, Alan McRae and former director Gordon Hutcheon, who passed away last November, for the key parts they played in helping the club get to where it is today.

Keith said: “Alan is still very much involved, the official title of honorary president doesn’t come close to giving him enough credit for the help he has given me, and the club, since handing on the chairman’s baton 22 years ago.

“Gordon’s sad passing in November cast a huge shadow over our club.

“He would have been proud of what we have achieved this season and it’s important to keep Gordon in our thoughts as we celebrate our first 100 years.

“The club’s last four years, as well as being amongst the most memorable, have also been the most significant.

“Special thanks go to our principal club partners, Terry Cobban of ACE and Jimmy Milne of Balmoral, for the support that ensured we were able to make such a hugely successful start to competing at SPFL level.

“We have climbed further up the Scottish football ladder by winning a promotion play-off, League Two and League One to reach the second tier, it’s the sort of stuff dreams are made of.

“I can assure you we will continue to dream in the belief that, as great as our first century was, the best has yet to come for Cove Rangers.”

The club’s directors would also like to thank Commercial Manager Angela Bruce and her army of helpers for the work they did to ensure everyone enjoyed a memorable evening.
