Ronnie Brown 1955 – 2022

The club was deeply saddened to learn of the death of former captain Ronnie Brown.

Defender Ronnie was one of four Elgin City players to join Cove Rangers in the summer of 1987 and enjoyed a successful five-year spell at Allan Park before leaving for Lossiemouth.

He later moved into coaching and management, leading Peterhead to the league title in the 1998/99 season.

Ronnie wrote his name into the Cove history books when he skippered the team to the first two trophies the club lifted in senior football, both finals played within a ten-day spell in November 1990.

The captain put in what the local press described as an ‘immaculate performance’ as Andy Paterson scored the winner against Fraserburgh in the Scottish Qualifying Cup (North) at Christie Park, and the following week, in the first ever Aberdeenshire Shield Final at the old Recreation Park in Peterhead, Cove repeated that 1-0 score-line over the Broch thanks to a Raymond Yule goal in extra-time.

Raymond played alongside Ronnie during his time with the club and remembers him fondly,

“He was a very accomplished defender, mainly a right-back, but could also play sweeper, and in fact he would have been comfortable anywhere across the back four. He wasn’t the tallest, but he had superb timing, and was really good in the air.

“Through his performances, he earned huge respect not only from his team-mates, but from opposition players across the Highland League. He didn’t just contribute in defence, but also had a habit of scoring some crucial goals, drifting in at the back post with his late runs into the box.

“We both lived in the Bridge of Don then, so I travelled a lot with Ronnie, and he was a brilliant guy on and off the park”.

The funeral of Ronnie Brown will be at 2.45pm on Wednesday, June 22nd at the West Chapel, Aberdeen Crematorium.

The thoughts of everyone at Cove Rangers FC are with his family.
