Stuart delighted with testimonial turnout

Back to news

Cove Rangers legend Stuart McKenzie has paid tribute to the fans who turned out for his testimonial match against Dunfermline, and all his friends and family who have supported him throughout his year of celebrations.

The big goalkeeper was afforded a guard of honour before the game as he walked down the tunnel hand in hand with his young children, Belle and Ben.

The affection and respect for Stuart was palpable, and he says it was a special moment,

“It was really nice to be able to share the occasion with my family and I would like to say thank you to everyone who contributed. It was also really kind of Dunfermline to present me with a plaque and shirt; that was a lovely gesture.”

As for the game, it was obvious from the off that the visitors were further on in their pre-season training and had benefitted from being full time and from being able to put in multiple sessions.

Stuart says it was, nevertheless, a worthwhile exercise for all the Cove players, and good for him to get his eye in after the close season layoff,

“The boys worked really hard, but it’s all about getting back to full fitness for them. From my point of view, it was great to make a few saves, although I’m always disappointed when I don’t keep a clean sheet. We’ll be in better shape for next week’s game against Gala Fairydean after two more training sessions.”

It was a first match in charge for new boss, Jim McIntyre, and he expressed his pleasure with the effort his players put in,

“It was a good workout, and you can see why the lads have been so successful down the years. They were there for each other, gave me everything I could have asked for, and all they need is to build up their fitness, which we’ll be doing in the week ahead.”

With the squad still being light in numbers, Jim says he’ll be redoubling his efforts on that front in the coming days,

“Dunfermline had the luxury of putting on nine subs, while we had only thirteen outfield players, so we do need to help the boys. I thought I had two deals agreed last week, but they fell through at the last minute. That can happen, it’s really frustrating, but I would expect to tie one or two up in the next few days.

“With two more sessions under their belts, you’ll see a different performance against Gala next Saturday, I can assure you of that.”

Jim also passed on his congratulations to the man of the moment,

“I was delighted for Stuart that he got a decent turnout, and it was great to see the support there for him. I’ve quickly realised how much respect there is for the big man, and he fully deserved his day.”
