Charlie Gilmour Joins on Loan

Back to news

Jim McIntyre has made his fifth signing of the summer transfer window, capturing midfielder Charlie Gilmour on a season-long loan from St Johnstone.

The twenty-three year old began his career with Arsenal, making his debut in a Europa League tie in November 2018, before moving to Norwich City the following year.

Charlie was loaned out to the Dutch side, Telstar, where he was a regular starter during the 2019-20 campaign. He joined Saints initially on a short-term deal, signing a two-year contract in the summer of last year, and picked up a winner’s medal when the Perth side lifted the League Cup with a 1-0 win over Livingston.

A successful loan spell at Alloa Athletic in the first half of last season saw Charlie net the first senior goal of his career, against Peterhead, and he was recalled to McDiarmid Park, making half a dozen appearances as St Johnstone preserved their top-flight status.

The manager says he expects the midfielder to make a big impact at Balmoral Stadium:

“He brings an energy which I think we need in the middle of the park, he’s mobile, gets around the pitch well, and gives me different options.

“Having been schooled at Arsenal, and had an impressive spell in Dutch football, he can certainly play, and he can get up and down all day long.

“I got good reports on Charlie from guys who have worked with him, and I know he caught the eye playing against us for Alloa last season. He’ll be a really strong addition to the squad.”

Charlie feels the Championship will be a good platform for him to show what he can bring to the team, and sees the switch to Balmoral Stadium as a great career move:

“I can’t wait to get started. I know this is a good club, they’re really ambitious, and I want to be a part of that.

“I’m the type of midfielder who likes to get on the ball, I like to get stuck in, and I hope I can impact the team as much as possible.

“I didn’t get much game time in the second half of last season, so I’m really looking forward to getting back out on the park again, getting that matchday feeling.”

Gilmour joins fellow new signings Gerry McDonagh, Evan Towler, Luis Longstaff and Cieran Dunne at Cove as Jim McIntyre continues to reshape his squad for the Championship campaign. He will wear shirt number 14.

The club would like to thank St Johnstone for their help in securing Charlie’s signing.
