Cove Rangers can this evening confirm that central defender Morgyn Neill is to remain with the club.
Morgyn had been due to join Alloa Athletic on loan, but following the change in management, Paul Hartley has indicated he wants to keep the big man here at Balmoral Stadium.
The central defender signed for the club in the summer of 2021 and played a major role in the League One title success, securing a place in the division’s SPFL team of the year.
His game time has been more limited this time round and he has started just five matches.
Morgyn says he is delighted to be staying, and is ready to fight for his place in the team:
“I’m chuffed. It’s been a hard few months for me personally, but with the gaffer coming in I’m hoping that’s a fresh start. We’ve had a conversation and he told me right away that I’m in his plans. It’s a new year, and I’m hoping this is a new beginning for me.”
The returning manager is pleased to have Neill as one of his defensive options:
“He did really well for me in the league winning campaign, I know what he can do, and I wanted to keep hold of him, so I’m happy we were able to stop the deal from going through.
“He’s a good, solid defender, puts his body on the line, and he’s also a good communicator. Overall, he’s very professional, and I look forward to working with him again.”
Morgyn is desperate to repay the faith shown in him, and cannot wait to get back out on the park again in a Cove shirt:
“Anyone who knows me, knows what I’m like. I don’t leave anything out there on the pitch, I give it one hundred percent, whether that’s in training or in games. I beat my chest, when we score, I get a bit emotional, it means so much to me. When I wasn’t playing, I still felt involved, that’s why you never saw me sitting in the dugout; I was always standing outside shouting on the boys.
“I’ve been doing extra training on my own to try to stay fit. I will need to up my match fitness, but I’ll be ready to play whenever I’m called upon.”
“This club means the world to me. I always give my all, whichever club I’m playing for, but I definitely have an emotional connection with the fans here at Cove and this is the best dressing room I’ve ever been in. That’s why, when I thought I was going out on loan, it really upset me.
“I’ve only been with these boys for eighteen months, but it feels like much longer, and I want that to continue. Now I just need to get back out on the pitch and do what I do best for this great club.”
We would like to thank Alloa Athletic for their understanding in this matter. Morgyn will be in Paul Hartley’s squad for Saturday’s home meeting with Queen’s Park.
