Jacob Jones Arrives at Balmoral

Back to news

The club is delighted to announce the signing of left-back Jacob Jones, subject to international clearance. The twenty-one year old has signed a two-year full-time contract with the club.

Jacob signed for Swansea City academy at the age of 9, and progressed right the way through to the Under 21’s team, where he competed in the EFL Trophy and Premier League 2.

Last season, Jacob joined Forest Green Rovers. The defender spent a short period on loan at Bath City, before joining King’s Lynn for the second half of the season. He also has experience of playing for the Wales Under 19’s and Under 20’s national teams.

Jacob says he is excited by the ambition of the club, as well as the idea of playing in Scotland:

“I’m very glad to have signed for Cove. It is my first time being this far north, and visiting Balmoral Stadium, and I must admit I am very impressed with the set-up.

“When the gaffer phoned me to discuss joining, I was excited by the project. There was interest from other clubs, but after talking with Paul and hearing of the ambition of the club, I was keen to come up the road and join.

“I’m here to play games, impress the club and fans, and to help achieve the ambitions of returning to the Championship. At the end of the day, football is all about winning games, and winning trophies ultimately, and that is what I am here to do.

“I was at Swansea since I turned nine. I progressed right through the academy there and I played for the Under-21’s side. I then moved to Forest Green last year, and made my debut at Hillsborough against Sheffield Wednesday, which was a great experience.

“Whilst at Forest Green, I had two loan spells, where I learnt a different side of the game. It was good to experience that. When I was at Swansea I was taught to play passing football, but whilst on loan I seen the other side of the game, the tougher, streetwise side you could say. It really developed me personally.”

Manager Paul Hartley is delighted to have added Jacob to the squad:

“That left-back position is an area we have been looking to strengthen in recent weeks. We thought we had someone lined up to join on loan, but the deal fell through, and then Jacob came to our attention last week.

“He had been on trial with Dundee a couple of weeks ago, and scored in a game against Brechin. I spoke with Tony Docherty, and I spoke to a couple of players and staff at Dundee who were all really impressed by him.

“He’s a player that has had a good education in the game from his time at Swansea. He has also learnt the other side to the game whilst at Forest Green. He’s still a young lad, but he adds competition to the squad, and he’s enthusiastic to do well.”

Now that Jacob has arrived in Aberdeen, he can’t wait to get started and to join up with the rest of the squad:

“It is my first time playing in Scotland, and I’m really looking forward to it. The fans are very passionate about their teams, and I know the leagues are very competitive. I’m looking forward to experiencing it, and to playing in front of the Cove fans.”
