Queen Of The South | Preview

Back to news

The team gets back to league business this weekend with a home game against Queen of the South. It will be the third meeting of the season, with each team having so far won on away territory.

Queens picked up the points at Balmoral back in August, while a late Rumarn Burrell goal secured our victory at Palmerston two months later.

Marvin Bartley’s side sit currently in seventh place in the table, but are just two points out of the play-offs, and Paul Hartley expects another tight encounter:

“They are one of our promotion rivals and that, of course, makes getting the three points even more important. The two games so far have been close, so there is every likelihood it will be the same this weekend. We know what Queens have to offer, they do carry a threat, so we have to make sure we are ready for that.

“They gave a good account of themselves against St Mirren in the Cup, and although they are currently sitting outside the play-off places, there really is nothing in it right now. They are a good team and have had some decent results of late.

“Picking up the victory would give us a bit more breathing space over them, and that is exactly what we are focused on doing.”

It has been a busy past week or so at the club with Mark Gallagher and Luke Strachan heading out on loan to get much-needed game time, Mikey Doyle and Fraser Fyvie signing new contracts, and Ola Lawal and Matty Shiels arriving at Balmoral Stadium.

The manager is pleased with the business he has done, and expects that to be the end of any movement during the window:

“I feel as if we have brought in quality and both players can make a real impact with us. It was important to get Luke and Mark playing again, and keeping Doyley and Fraser is great news; they add real experience and knowhow.

“It was always going to be quieter this year, but it’s good to have a bit of freshness, and I’m happy with the squad I have. It’s not a big one, so we could do without too many injuries, but we have good players there, and I have faith in them to get the job done.”

Michael Doyle is suspended after his harsh sending-off at Hamilton and Fraser is two to three weeks away from returning to full fitness. On the plus side, Mitch Megginson has now recovered from illness and returns to the squad, and Matty and Ola will both be in line to make their Cove Rangers debuts.
