Midfielder Mouhamed Niang says the patched-up Cove Rangers squad is ready for the battle and prepared to do whatever it takes to snatch a playoff place at the end of the season.
The twenty-four year old, known to everyone at the club as ‘Sena’, has been a big part of Paul Hartley’s plans all season, and having joined the club last summer, has missed just three games throughout the campaign.
Two of those came recently, after picking up a groin injury in the defeat to Montrose, but he returned from the bench in the victory over Stirling Albion, helping himself to his first Cove Rangers goal:
“It was a massive win for us, every one is at this stage, and I thought it was deserved, we were pretty comfortable and played a decent game.
“It was great to score, I’ve been craving that since the start of the season and it’s good to get your stats up, whether that’s goals or assists. I know that’s not my main job, but it’s good to get a goal, I was buzzing, and it was such an important one too! Hopefully the first of many.”
Having played previously for Partick Thistle, Montrose and Alloa Athletic, Sena knows this division inside out, and he believes that experience can be vital in the run-in:
“League One is tough, one game can change everything and you might need to ride your luck a bit at times.
“We do have a lot of injuries right now, but you just need to deal with these things. I know what it’s like at this stage of the season, people are going to feel things, going to get injured, but we just need everyone to pull together in the right direction.”
A number of the walking wounded will require treatment from physio, Charlotte Clark, to allow them to play on, but Sena says that as well as physical fitness, attitude and spirit count for a lot when the heat is on:
“I love it! Obviously, you’d like to secure it five games before the end, but if this is the way it has to be to give us a chance of going up, I’ll take it.
“It’s not just the players, it’s everyone at the club, those behind the scenes, the fans, we all need to pull in the right direction. In football, you need a challenge at times, and if we do make the playoffs like this, you’ll be flying because you know you’ve worked hard and had a good run to get there.
“It’s there in the changing room, I see that. On Saturday there, the injured guys were in at half-time, at full-time, all doing their bit for the team. We all want to make sure that come the fourth of May we’ve secured the playoffs and everyone in there is absolutely looking forward to the challenge ahead of us.”
