Having become Paul Hartley’s first signing of the summer, midfielder Declan Glass is raring to go, and cannot wait to return to a stadium where he made a host of special memories five years ago.
Declan first signed for Cove Rangers in 2019, on loan from Dundee United, and put in a series of exciting performances, scoring seven goals in twenty-one appearances before being recalled midway through the campaign. He had however played a major part in helping the side to clinch the League Two title, and says he still reflects proudly on that:
“It’s a place where I’ve had a lot of good memories, so it’s nice to back somewhere I feel really comfortable. The first time, it was probably the most enjoyable spell of my career, a period I look back on fondly and with real pride, so being here again feels right at this stage of my career.”
Declan had been at United for seven years and gone out on loan on a number of occasions, including a second stint at Balmoral in 2023, and he was a regular at Tannadice during the first half of last season, playing twenty-five times before falling out of favour.
He had other offers to consider, but the manager’s persistence played a big part in the twenty-four year old opting for a return to Balmoral Stadium:
“From the minute I left Dundee United, the manager has been on to me, and feeling wanted after not really playing for the last six months means a lot.
“Being at United was brilliant for me, I cannot thank them enough for everything, but I think it’s probably a good time to spread my wings, step out into the real world, and come somewhere where I’m not on loan; this is my club now.”
Like most players, Declan has had his injury issues to deal with, but he says those are behind him now, and he is as fit as he has ever been:
“I’m feeling good! Obviously, I have had my problems, but only missed one or two games through injury last season and I’m ready to go.”
“I’ve been keeping fit on my own, tennis, golf and a few runs, just staying busy, and I’m looking forward to meeting up with the lads. This is a time of year I love, and I’m ambitious and optimistic for the new season.
“We have got to be looking to be at the top end of the table. I’m making no secret of that, I’m not here just to make up the numbers. I expect us to be challenging up there and I’m sure everyone else feels the same.”
Declan, who will wear the number 10 shirt during 2024-25, is also delighted by the prospect of reuniting with the Cove Rangers supporters:
“The fans have always been great with me up here, always really supportive, they’ve been brilliant. I look forward to seeing them out backing the team when the games get up and running.”
