Match Preview | Dumbarton

Back to news

Matchday three of the 24/25 William Hill League 1 campaign sees us back at home where we will face Dumbarton on Saturday afternoon.

It’s the first meeting between the two sides since April 2022, when Mitch Megginson’s late strike earned the side a 1-0 victory and sealed the league title for the club in what was a memorable afternoon.

We head into this game still in search of our first three points of the season, despite a strong showing in Dumfries.

Reflecting on the previous match, Paul said “The boys were excellent against Queen of the South, played a lot of good football, and there was the drive and energy that I expect to see from the side. We created so many chances, but just weren’t clinical enough on some occasions, and unlucky on others.

“Having gone ahead, we should have taken a grip on the game, but there were two minutes of madness, some slack defending, and they took advantage.

“I have been in football long enough to know that you don’t always get what you deserve, and there’s no doubt we will play much worse at times this season and win matches, just like Queens did last week.”

Having joined the club just before our opening match against Annan Athletic, Aberdeen FC loanees Adam Emslie and Findlay Marshall have made a strong impression, with both finding the net to open their accounts for the club.

Paul added “The big plus was seeing Adam Emslie getting his first Cove goal, just like Findlay Marshall had done against Annan in the opener, and the two young Aberdeen lads have made a real impact already. I expect them to continue to be important players for us in the coming months.

“There were excellent performances throughout the team at Palmerston, I really enjoyed what I saw, and it was pleasing to see Declan Glass hit the heights. We all know how skilful Declan is, he was on top form last week, and so unlucky with his excellent shot late on which crashed back out off the bar.

Despite the result in Dumfries, Paul is optimistic that the team can build on last weekend’s performance:

“I know the game is all about results, and we do need to start winning, but there were so many positive signs last week, and I would expect the boys to feed off that. Despite losing, they should feel confident, and we need them to find that form again today.”

“If we can do that, take our chances, and remain solid at the back – which we were for eighty-eight of the ninety minutes in Dumfries – then I would be hopeful of securing that first league victory.”
