Having taken full points in successive games against Alloa Athletic and Queen of the South, we face another of our promotion rivals this weekend, the side heading down the coast to Links Park to take on Montrose.
It is a fixture top-scorer Mitch Megginson knows only too well, and last time out he netted his first of the season to settle a tight encounter at Balmoral Stadium:
“They’re probably the team we’ve played the most during our time in the SPFL, and there are boys there who have been with them for years. They’ve got a pretty settled, experienced team, just adding one or two each season. We beat Montrose here, which would have hurt them, and they’ll be out for revenge.
“I’m certainly expecting a tough game, but it’s one we can approach with confidence.
“In this league there will be difficult spells, so you need to have a strong mentality and keep working hard. With it being so tight, you know that a couple of victories will keep you in contention for the top four, and that has to be our target.”
Mitch also scored vital goals in our wins over Kelty Hearts and Queens, and having had a slow start to the campaign, he is aiming to keep finding the net as he chases down a few milestones.
The striker now has 219 Cove Rangers goals overall, ninety-one of those coming since we gained promotion from the Highland League, and he is targeting the century in our SPFL era. More than anything, he just wants to keep scoring, and helping the team:
“That’s my job, leading the line and doing what I can. I might not have the legs I used to have, but the instinct is there, as a goalscorer you know the positions to take up naturally, and that doesn’t leave you.
“There’s been good support too with a number of the players getting on target, and you would expect goals from the likes of Fraser Fyvie and Connor Scully. Blair Yule has weighed in too, although we don’t like him shooting too much! Those guys have been excellent, they know the game and what positions to take, and they can do almost anything on a football pitch.”
The striker has been delighted with the side’s recent run, and is hoping to see that continue on Saturday:
“It’s been decent! A blip against Arbroath, but we’ve bounced back well, we ended Alloa’s unbeaten run with what was a strong performance, and we managed the game against Queens to take the points there too.
“Having a settled back four has helped, and there’s a good mix right now, the experience down the spine of the team and the youthful bounce, the legs you get from the younger players.
“It’s a really good dressing room now, we’ve been building up the team spirit with the squad coming together, and that’s going to help us in what will be another tough season. Having that bond is key to any success you get in this game.”
