Midfielder Arron Darge is on the verge of joining an elite band of players; those who have chalked-up at least fifty games for Cove Rangers since we joined the SPFL.
Arron made his forty-ninth appearance in the win over Montrose, and given his level of consistency, seems certain to hit the half century at Dumbarton at the weekend.
He has been an ever-present throughout this campaign and has started our last twenty-seven competitive matches, stretching back to the 2-0 success at Edinburgh City at the start of March. It is all a far cry from his early days at the club when Arron admits he was simply hoping to get out on to the pitch:
“I had to be patient, it was all about working hard, fighting for my spot in the team, and I had that spell when I was in and out, and moving positions, so I’m delighted it has settled down and now I just want to keep my place.
“The fifty has come round very fast! I’m obviously proud to be reaching that milestone, and I need to stay fit, do my bit for the team, and hopefully we’ll keep winning.”
Remarkably, only fifteen players have previously hit that mark, and with the likes of Shay Logan, Iain Vigurs and Ryan Strachan coming into sight, by the end of the season the twenty-one year old will be closing in on the top ten.
Having signed a contract extension a couple of months ago, Arron is loving life in the north-east, and he hopes the team can keep the current run going:
“We have the momentum right now, which is brilliant. We all knew we had the quality, and even in the games we weren’t winning earlier in the campaign, there were good spells of play, so we had the belief it would come.
“That’s a massive thing in football, and so is the confidence you gain from winning, scoring goals, keeping clean sheets. You feel as if you’re on a roll, and that does help when you’re out on the pitch.”
Last weekend, on top of his more regular midfield duties, Arron played a huge part in what was the clinching goal scored by Mitch Megginson. It was a moment he treasured:
“It’s probably my first assist for the club! I won the ball and there was no-one in front of me so I just thought I would see how far I could run. Then it was all about the timing of the pass, and when I got that right, there was no-one better to be on the end of it than Mitch. I had every faith he would put it in the back of the net.
“It had been a tough game, so going two-nil up so late on, you knew the points were won then. That was a brilliant feeling.”
In recent weeks, Arron has been partnered-up with Blair Yule in the heart of the midfield, a pairing which has paid rich dividends:
“That’s been since the Alloa game away. I think we complement each other well, we both like to run about and make challenges, we cover the ground well, and it definitely seems to be working.
“You need to put that kind of shift in given how this league is. At the start of the season you knew it was going to be tight, but I didn’t think it would be quite like this! It’s brilliant though, every game is in the balance, and it shows that if you can put together a winning run, you can hopefully open up a bit of a gap.
“We are fully focused on doing just that at Dumbarton and trying to keep the run going.”
