Mitch Chasing Another Record

Back to news

Following his recent hot streak, goalscoring legend Mitch Megginson is on the verge of another Cove Rangers milestone.

Having netted in his last five matches, the striker will emulate his own record of six in a row if he is on target again when Stenhousemuir visit Balmoral Stadium this weekend.

Mitch’s previous best run during our SPFL era came in the first season in League Two when a double in a 3-1 win at Queen’s Park in December 2019 set him off, the sequence ending when he found the net in a 2-2 draw away to Albion Rovers at the start of February 2020.

He missed out the next week, but then bagged doubles in each of our three remaining fixtures of that curtailed campaign, ending it having scored in nine out of ten, a run which brought him fourteen goals, more than half his seasonal tally.

Rumarn Burrell is the only other player to have achieved five in a row, doing so in December 2023 and January of this year. During his purple patch, the English striker netted in eight successive League One matches, including back-to-back hat-tricks, but failed to score in a Scottish Cup tie at Forthbank during that sequence.

Rory McAllister found the net in five straight League One games during the late summer of 2021, but that run was interrupted when he missed out in a Challenge Cup encounter in the midst of it.

Mitch also scored in five successive league matches during a run which remarkably spanned almost ten months. Having notched three on the bounce at the end of 2019-20, he was on target in our first two League One games when the delayed 2020-21 campaign finally got underway the following October.

Far and away the club’s top marksman across our time in the SPFL, Mitch Megginson has netted eighty league goals and ninety-five in all competitions since we gained promotion in 2019.
