Will Gillingham celebrated a landmark in the weekend draw at Annan when he made his fiftieth appearance for Cove Rangers.
The central defender joined team-mates Mikey Doyle and Arron Darge who also passed that milestone in recent weeks, the trio now part of an elite group of just eighteen players who have played fifty or more games for the club in our SPFL era.
By the end of the campaign, the trio look set to be closing in on the top ten.
Will says he is proud to have reached the half century and is loving his life and football in the north east:
“I definitely am! To have played so many games for a team like Cove is a really big deal for me. I think hitting that number shows how committed you are, and how committed the club is to you.
“It also means you’ve hit a level of consistency to be selected so often. I’ve had quite a few partners this season; there was Liam Parker who’s a top footballer, and we were building up a good partnership when he got injured, I’ve had Doyley, who’s so experienced, and Ryan Harrington who is not a natural central defender, but is such a good pro, and fitted in well.”
“I’ve also managed not to pick up suspensions or injuries, which has helped, and the full-timers are at the gym once or twice a week; a lot of what we do there is about injury prevention.”
The twenty-six year old, born in London, but brought up in New Zealand, began his career there before moving to the States to play college football, then turned professional in California. His dream had always been to play in Britain, and he believes his success at Cove has justified his decision to relocate here:
“100%! It helps that we have such a good group, a mixture of younger players and the older heads, and we all get on so well with each other. It’s a good place to be and I’m really happy I made the move here.”
Will feels he has developed as a player during his time with Cove, and says the current campaign will help him further:
“It is such a competitive league, and from the outside people probably don’t realise how many good players there are in it.”
“It has definitely helped me, and my focus is on continuing to improve and really kick-on. Kelty on Saturday will be another tough game, they’re always a good team, and I’ll be up against an old team-mate in Scotty Williamson who has just picked up the player of the month award, so he will need to be watched.
“These matches against your rivals are so important, for me it’s a must win game, and we’ll be going all out for the three points.”
