Inv Cal Thistle (A) | Match Preview

Back to news

The curtain falls on 2024 with a trip to Inverness, and a fourth meeting of the season with Caley Thistle.

The earlier encounter in the Highland capital in September finished 1-1 while the visitors secured a deserved 2-1 victory at Balmoral Stadium a couple of months later, by which time they had gone into administration and were fighting for their lives.

Three weeks after that one, the sides met again in the north-east, Cove securing a dramatic Scottish Cup success with a couple of late goals from Declan Glass and Grady McGrath.

Despite their troubles, Caley Thistle have enjoyed a good run of results in the league, and Paul Hartley knows it will be another stiff challenge for his side:

“We know how good a team they are, even though we won the cup-tie that was tough game, hard-fought, and you know the quality they possess. They do get the ball down and try to play, just like us, and although they’re dangerous, you always get chances against them.”

The manager has said all season long the most important thing is to remain in the mix in what is a highly competitive division, and last week’s win over Alloa ensured we kept up our challenge:

“It was good to get another three points in our last home game of the year, and now we want to try to get a nice wee unbeaten run going, to build on the momentum. We want to finish the year on a high and go into 2025 in a positive mindset.”

Paul believes little is likely to change as we move into the new year; he expects the promotion battle to be just as intense over the next four months, but feels we are in a good position:

“You always want to have more points, but I think we’re well placed, and it’s all about kicking-on in the second half of the season. The squad is quite small, so it would be good to maybe get one or two in, but that’s not easy in the January transfer window.

“Overall, we’re in a good position though, and I think we’re ready to have a real go.”

Liam Parker and Blair Yule are still sidelined, but on the plus side Mitch Megginson should be fit to return after missing the Alloa game.
