Queen Of The South (A) | Match Preview

Back to news

Having brought the curtain down on 2024 with an outstanding performance and victory in Inverness, we kick-off the new year at the other end of the country, taking on Queen of the South at Palmerston.

It will be our third meeting of the season, both sides having won their home encounters. Fyvie and Megginson were on target in our 2-0 success in October, and we should have won the earlier game in Dumfries, throwing away two cheap goals in as many minutes after Adam Emslie had given us the lead.

Those are the kind of defensive errors Paul Hartley knows we are going to have to avoid as the team gears up for the second half of the campaign:

“It’s all about keeping it tight and working hard to make sure you’re solid at the back, which we have been of late. We had the two clean sheets before Inverness, and despite having had to make a lot of adjustments, there has been a real improvement from earlier in the season.”

Having had to reshuffle the side again last weekend, the manager was delighted with what he got from his players, and hopes to see a repeat showing on Saturday:

“I was so pleased last week, it was excellent, everyone was outstanding, so of course I want more of the same in what will be another tough away fixture.”

“They’re a good team, always difficult, so we’re going to need to go down there and do what we’ve been doing for the past few weeks.”

In what remains an incredibly tight division, Cove are still the only side to have won four league games in a row this season, and with the gaps beginning to stretch just a little, Paul knows the importance of remaining in the pack:

“I’m not so sure it’s going to start opening up, I think the second half of the season is going to be much the same. You’ve seen it throughout, teams win a couple, then lose a couple, and I expect that to continue.

“You just need to try to be as consistent as possible and do what you can to remain in contention all the way to the end of the season.”
