Declan Set To Join 50 Club

Back to news

Declan Glass is on the verge of joining the exclusive group of players who have made fifty or more appearances for Cove Rangers since we joined the SPFL.

The popular midfielder will reach that landmark if he features against Montrose on Saturday, becoming the nineteenth to have done so. He will follow in the footsteps of current team-mates Will Gillingham, Arron Darge and Mikey Doyle who have all joined the club in recent weeks.

Declan first signed for Cove in the summer of 2019 in time for our debut League Two season, scoring seven times in twenty one games, and such was the impact he made, he was recalled by parent club Dundee United. Declan returned on loan for the second half of our Championship campaign and signed on permanently at the start of this season.

He says he is proud to be hitting the half century:

“I definitely am! It’s no mean feat to have played so many games for a club like Cove, especially given the competition even to pull the shirt on every week. You look at some of the names on the list, the guys who already have fifty-odd games, and those who are now well over a hundred, and it’s great to be part of that.

“I definitely see it as an achievement.”

Declan has loved his time at Balmoral Stadium and had no doubts about returning last summer:

“As soon as I spoke to the manager and he made it clear he wanted me, I knew I would be coming back. There was unfinished business there, and I was delighted to sign on again.

“I’ve got a lot to thank Paul Hartley for. I think back to that summer of 2019 and my career was going nowhere, I wasn’t in United’s plans, I was struggling. He gave me the chance, the platform, and it worked out so well I was back at Tannadice in the January. I ended up getting two medals that season too, one from Cove and one for United winning the Championship, so that was pretty special.”

After being out with injury earlier in the campaign, the midfielder is enjoying a good run in the side, and relishing what is as tight a promotion battle as he can remember:

“People might find this strange to hear, but I can honestly say this is the most difficult league I have played in during my career. Every week it’s so competitive, the teams are evenly matched, and it certainly keeps you on your toes.

“What we have to look to do is get a good run going. That won’t be easy given how tough each game is, but if we can do it, a top four place will definitely be within our reach. We have proved that on our day we are good enough to beat anyone in the league; we just need to find that on a more consistent basis.”
