This weekend sees just a fifth meeting between Cove Rangers and Forfar Athletic, and a first ever in the Scottish Cup, when the Angus side make the trip north on Fourth Round duty.
The initial encounter came in November 2020 in the League One campaign shortened by the COVID epidemic, Cove winning 3-0 thanks to an early Rory McAllister counter and a Mitch Megginson double. It was our fourth straight victory to kick-off the season.
A week later Forfar made their first trip to Balmoral Stadium and put up a tougher fight in a League Cup group tie, McAllister’s penalty midway through the second half enough to clinch the points.
It was similarly tight on Boxing Day 2020 in what was to be our last league encounter to date, Megginson again on target with what was his eighth goal in as many League One games at that point. After a poor run of results, it was a win which revitalised the side and we would go on to make the play-offs, only to lose out to Airdrieonians in heartbreaking fashion the following May.
Our most recent meeting came back in July and proved a controversial one. Blair Malcolm put Forfar in front in our League Cup group match, but Connor Scully equalised with a fine angled strike soon after. We missed chances to secure the victory, so it went to a penalty shootout to decide the extra point, and although Balint Demus saved Forfar’s first spot-kick, Fyvie, Kerr and Gallagher all missed, allowing the home side to claim the bonus.
All that was rendered irrelevant soon after when it was adjudged that Grady McGrath should have been suspended for the tie, and a 3-0 defeat was imposed by the football authorities.
Now, history will be made as the sides go head-to-head for the first time in the national knockout competition, both dreaming either of Cup glory, or a money-spinning Fifth Round tie.
