Scully Ready For Cup Test

Back to news

We continue our eighteenth successive season competing in the Scottish Cup with a fifth round tie against Championship promotion hopefuls Livingston at Almondvale.

Cove have been in the tournament every year since 2007, enjoying a mixed bag of results, but this is the third year out of seven, and the second in a row, that we have reached the last sixteen.

Our first Scottish Cup tie was in December 1989 when, as a Highland League club, we pushed Queen of the South all the way before losing out 2-1 in Dumfries.

Saturday will be our sixty-second game in the competition, thirteen of those so far played coming since we stepped-up to the SPFL, and midfielder Connor Scully is the only ever-present during that time.

As the longest-serving player at the club, and having also played in around twenty ties prior to our promotion, he fully understands how important the competition is:

“It’s good to have this, a wee break from the league, and it is a big day. We’ve not been past round five, so really looking forward to it, and it’s a great achievement for the club.

“We know they’re a really good team, big and physical, but we’ll go down there and have a go, and hopefully give a good account of ourselves.

“Being the last team outside the top two divisions is something to be proud of, we’ve had some good performances this season, and the aim is to emulate that in the cup this weekend.

“I’ve got a long history in the competition with Cove; there was the trip to Ibrox, Hibs away, but also a Tuesday night at Fort William, which was memory in itself! It’s just great to have these occasions to look back on.”

Assuming he is selected on Saturday, it will be Connor’s eighty-third successive start in competitive matches, and his 222nd appearance in all competitions since we joined the SPFL. Such has been his consistency, he has missed just eight games in that period:

“It’s something I’m really proud of, and I just want to keep playing as many games as I can. I’m well over the 500 mark now, including the Highland League days, and there have been so many highlights along the way.

“Reaching the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup would be another, getting the furthest we have ever been, and as a group we’ll go there knowing we can make a bit of history. It will be tough, they’re a strong side, but we just want to put on a good showing and make it as difficult for them as we can.”
