Montrose Next Up In Promotion Push

Back to news

After the highly impressive midweek win at Kelty, it is next stop Links Park for the team, and another big match against Montrose.

The victory in Fife moved us back up into second spot, ahead of Stenhousemuir on goal difference, and with eight games remaining, we now have a twelve point advantage over the teams just outside the play-off places.

Clinching one of those will be the first objective, and a win in Angus would take us one step closer. Paul Hartley says full focus will be on doing just that:

“It’s all about the next game now, Tuesday’s gone, good performance, but we’re away from home again and we’re going to need the same level, the same standard from the team.

“We’re not too far away from securing a place, but we’ve seen how football can change if you’re not on it, and we can’t afford any slip-ups.”

The side put on one of their best showings of the season against Kelty, and the manager says it is a good time in the season to be playing the kind of football we are:

“The level of our play has been really high, I think that’s been the key thing and whoever has stepped into the side had slotted in and done really well. Some of the football has been absolutely outstanding, but that starts from attitude and hard work, and we need to keep that going.

“We are in a really good place right now, but we take nothing for granted.”

Cove have had the better of the exchanges so far this season – two wins and a draw – and are unbeaten in the last six at Links Park stretching back to April 2021. Montrose have fallen off the pace, and are just five points clear of second bottom Annan, but Paul warns they can still be dangerous:

“They’ve been a wee bit up and down, but they do carry a threat as we saw from the game here at Balmoral last month. They’ve got good players, especially at the top end of the pitch, a lot of pace, and it’s always difficult, usually a close game against them.

“We’ve got to go down there with the same mentality and same attitude, and do what we’ve been doing in recent months.”

Will Gillingham will again be out, and Arron Darge will be monitored after missing the Kelty game through illness, but everyone else is available.
