With just seven games remaining, and the battle for promotion as intense as ever, captain Fraser Fyvie says he is relishing the challenge and ready to push all the way.
The first target is to secure a play-off slot, and with a ten point advantage over fifth-placed Queen of the South, we are edging closer to that, but the captain knows there can be no slip-ups if the team is to secure its ambition:
“Arbroath are looking good right now, five points clear, it’s theirs to throw away, but anything can happen during the last few weeks, and we have to be ready.”
“It’s such a competitive division, you see that every week, and every team in the league has at least two or three really good players, boys who could be playing at a higher level, so you just can’t afford to let your standards drop.”
That is something the players have addressed since Stenhousemuir’s last visit at the start of December. We lost 3-0 that night, but have been beaten just twice in the fourteen matches since, picking up eight wins along the way:
“We have been playing a lot of really good football, scoring plenty goals, and passing the ball the way we want to.
“There’s a good mix in the squad, the experienced boys have been playing their part, but so have the younger ones, and the three Aberdeen players have been outstanding. Dylan Lobban has been brilliant at right-back, Marsh (Findlay Marshall) has really developed in midfield, and Adam Emslie has brought goals and assists.
“They’ve added something to the team, but the other boys have stepped-up too; Blair Yule has been playing so well recently, and we missed him against Montrose when he was out with the virus which has hit the dressing room.”
“It’s a good squad, a strong dressing room, and I think you can see that out on the pitch.”
Fraser has enjoyed a success-laden career, but while he seems to have been around forever, is only about to turn thirty-two later this month. Coaching and management is something he is interested in, he has already secured his A Licence, but he believes that is still some way off:
“That’s for the future. I feel better now than I did when I was twenty-six, I still love playing the game, and plan to carry on for as long as I can.
“Most importantly, the focus for now is on finishing this season, and given where we are, we have to be thinking about promotion, whether that’s by winning the league or going through the play-offs.
“It’s going to be a tough challenge, but it’s one we are ready for.”
