Darge: Full Focus On Promotion

Back to news

With the pressure being ramped up as we enter the decisive phase of the campaign, Arron Darge says the whole squad is ready to meet the challenge, all the players focused on a successful conclusion.

We currently have an eight point cushion over fifth-placed Alloa Athletic with five games to play, an advantage which makes us favourites to reach the end of season shoot-out, and Arron is convinced the team can see that through:

“We’ve got a great chance to get promoted, the target was always top four, winning the title or making the play-offs, and that’s where we are.

“It’s Arbroath’s to throw away right now, but with five games to go there’s more than enough time left to change that, and we just need to try to focus on getting the fifteen points and see where that takes us.”

With the division so finely balanced, and currently every team other than Dumbarton having something to play for, Arron says it has been an intense environment from day one:

“The league is really competitive, it’s so tough, and you never know what the results are going to be week to week. It’s a lot harder than it was last season, that’s for sure.”

During his time at Cove, we have seen Arron more often at right-back or in midfield, but since the end of December he has largely been deployed as a centre-half, alongside Mikey Doyle:

“It’s actually been brilliant! The entire time I came through at Hearts I was always a central defender, but any time I went out on loan, I was pushed out to the right or played in centre mid, so I’ve really enjoyed it.

“Having Doyley there is great, he talks and talks, he gives you cover, and he always gives one hundred percent.

“He’s been here before, as have a few of the other older boys, so they know all about the pressure at this stage of the season. They’ve got that experience, the knowhow, and they’ve been so good at passing that on and helping us younger ones.”

That, Arron believes, could be a key element during the run-in:

“The feeling in the dressing room is great, everyone’s up for it, and we’re going to give it our all over those last five games.

“That starts with Caley Thistle, and they’re a good team. But for the points deduction, they’d have been up there challenging, and it will be another tough test.”

“I’ve got good memories personally of the last meeting, when I scored up in Inverness, so it would be nice to do that again, but the main thing will be stopping them, and getting the three points.

“Of course you want to play well, play nice football, but that’s not always easy at this stage of the season, and the most important thing is getting the win. That’s what we’ll be aiming to do on Saturday.”
