Another Milestone For Mitch

Back to news

When Mitch Megginson netted against Kelty Hearts last night the striker hit another major milestone for the club; it was his 100th goal in all competitions since we gained promotion to the SPFL in 2019.

Having earlier this season celebrated his century of Scottish League goals, the first of those for Arbroath against Clyde way back in 2010, he now has another achievement to be proud of.

Mitch has far and away been our most lethal marksman during our time in the SPFL, with his nearest challenger, Rory McAllister, on 31 goals. Just four others – Jamie Masson (28), Fraser Fyvie (28), Rumarn Burrell (24) and Connor Scully (21) – have hit the twenty mark.

There has been only one season – 2022-23, when he scored eight times – that Mitch has failed to reach double figures.

Mitch’s first goal during our SPFL era came against Caley Thistle on July 23rd 2019, in a League Cup group game in Inverness, and his overall total includes one hat-trick, against East Fife in August 2021.

His hottest streak came between December 2019 and February 2020, when he netted in six successive games. There have been three other occasions when he has scored in at least five straight league matches.

Mitch’s favourite opponents have been East Fife, against whom he has plundered eight goals, and he has six to his name against Brechin City, Caley Thistle, Montrose, Peterhead and now Kelty, his half dozen against them having come in the last eighteen months.

In total, Mitch has scored against thirty different clubs, twenty-six from the SPFL plus Brora Rangers, East Kilbride, St Johnstone U20 and Rangers U20 in cup-ties.

It is a measure of the striker’s importance over the years that his tally of 100 represents a quarter of the 402 we have scored since joining the SPFL.

Across his Cove Rangers career, having signed back in 2016 when we were still in the Highland League, Mitch now has 228 goals to his name, and we look forward to many more in the years ahead.
