KELTY HEARTS 0-4 COVE RANGERS
The team put on a show in Fife, easing to a very comfortable victory which saw us move back up into second place.
Mitch Megginson celebrated his century of goals in our SPFL era with an early header, Fraser Fyvie netted twice after the break and Adam Emslie put the icing on the cake with his tenth of the season.
Kelty had little to offer in response and could have no complaints about the scoreline.
Will Gillingham remained on the sidelines for this one, joined there by Arron Darge who had picked up the virus which ruled Nick Suman out on Saturday. Nick was back on the bench, Liam Parker restored to the starting line-up in the only change from the win over Queen of the South.
We got off to a quick start when, after some sustained passing, Fraser Fyvie fed a ball into the area for Findlay Marshall to run on to. Having stolen in front of Flatman, the midfielder got his shot away, but Adams saved with his right foot.
Kelty had their first chance soon after from a corner on the left. The ball was swung to the back post, veteran Broadfoot climbing highest, but his header flew over.
The boys were soon back on the front foot in what had been a high-tempo start, and forced a string of corners, making the breakthrough from the last of those. Connor Scully whipped the ball in from the left and Mitch MEGGINSON rose above his marker to cleverly angle his header beyond the keeper.
It was a milestone goal for the striker, his 100th in all competitions since we joined the SPFL and his 228th for the club overall.
While we continued to enjoy the bulk of the possession, Kelty tried to probe, and there was a half-chance for McCarvel in the fourteenth minute, his low twenty-yard effort comfortably saved by the diving Balint Demus.
We were soon on the attack again, and after another fine passing move Megginson laid the ball off for Findlay Marshall to shoot, his effort deflecting off Broadfoot’s heel and flying wide. Marshall turned provider soon after, his square pass finding Blair Yule on the edge of the box. The midfielder took a touch before shooting left-footed, attempting to emulate his goal at the weekend, but Adams was able to tip over.
Megginson then had a low shot deflected wide and Dylan Lobban curled just over from twenty yards as the boys maintained their impressive start to the game.
Most of our play had gone down the right, but Megginson found Emslie on the left in the thirty-seventh minute, allowing Adam to attack the home back line. His powerful low cross was scrambled clear
Shortly before the interval Kelty had a rare opening, Watson shooting low from the edge of the box but Demus dived full-length to make a one-handed save. Play was quickly back up the other end, Fyvie running at the home defence before shooting just wide from twenty yards.
Ryan Harrington then had a go from a tight angle, Adams diving to snatch the ball at his right post.
We doubled our advantage within seconds of the restart. Mitch Megginson gathered and rolled a pass into the area where Fraser FYVIE took a touch before drilling a low angled shot past the keeper.
After Mitch’s personal milestone earlier in the match, Fraser’s strike brought up a notable landmark for the club. It was our 400th league and cup goal since our promotion in 2019.
The game then went into a quieter spell with little in the way of chances being created, although we continued to look the better side. Adam Emslie and Ryan Harrington linked-up well to tee-up Connor Scully in the sixty-fifth minute, but his dipping effort dropped wide.
The points were secured in our next attack. Megginson had almost got through, the ball half-cleared, but Scully was on to it and played a precision pass for Fraser FYVIE, the skipper smashing home another low finish.
Two minutes later it was 4-0. Adam EMSLIE teased two defenders, cut inside, and hammered an angled drive past the despairing Adams. It was our 50th League One goal of the campaign.
The keeper was called into action again almost immediately, when after a short corner routine Scully shot low to the near post, forcing Adams into a scrambling save.
The manager then made two changes, Declan Glass and Quinn Coulson on for Megginson and Marshall, and we continued to control the contest, very nearly securing a fifth when Harrington and Emslie combined and Adam’s searching cross was knocked wide by O’Ware.
That was to be the last serious action, the team comfortably seeing the game out and emulating their biggest win of the season.
